Highlights from the 2017 Independence Health Care Forum: Building Connections

Last month, on June 1–2, Independence hosted our 2017 Health Care Forum at the Borgata in Atlantic City, NJ. This year, Independence was pleased to present a fantastic keynote speaker, Mick Ebeling, founder and CEO of Not Impossible Labs. In addition, the two–day event included remarks from President and CEO Dan Hilferty and dynamic presentations from key leaders within the industry.

Featured presentations

The keynote featured the work of Not Impossible Labs, an organization that develops solutions to real–world problems and disrupts the status quo by creating innovations that empower people to come together, creating real change. Not Impossible operates on a fundamental mantra of “Commit. Then figure it out.”

The two–day event also featured innovative discussions including:

Exploring what’s ahead for the future of health care, both locally and nationally. McKinsey & Company shared how environmental, political, regulatory, and other forces continue to impact the affordability of and access to health care.
An overview of Sandbox Industries’ work supporting startups whose products and services counter these forces by boosting efficiency, lowering costs, increasing transparency, and improving overall patient outcomes.
Various strategic approaches that Independence and the Blues have implemented to increase engagement with our members and efficiency with our providers. For example, the Community Health Management Hub is a tool exclusive to the Blues that enables Independence to turn population health data into real sustainable solutions.

What’s ahead

As we continue to build connections and focus on the future, we look forward to the launch of flexible networks in 2018 to help guide members to top-performing providers through custom network tiering. Strategic changes in primary care practices will be made through our Facilitated Health Networks model to improve the effectiveness of value-based care by engaging, enabling, and empowering our health systems to provide the highest quality care to our members.
