Quality care starts with choosing the appropriate care setting
Helping your employees and their families understand how and where to receive care can help them access treatment in the most effective setting. It can also help them, and you, save on health care costs. AmeriHealth Administrators is pleased to provide information to share with your employees, so they understand the differences — before they need to use them.

AmeriHealth Administrators provider finder tool
Choosing the right provider for a member’s needs can help them save time and money, and make confident decisions about their health care.
The Find a Doctor tool on myahabenefits.com can help employees identify doctors, hospitals, medical equipment, and specialty services within their plan and geographic area. This easy-to-use tool displays doctor and hospital profiles to ensure members are matched with a provider that is right for them.
The type of health plan your employees have determines the network of providers they can visit:
-
In‑network providers are the doctors and hospitals in the plan’s network. Members will save the most money by visiting network providers.
-
Out-of-network providers are those not in the plan’s network. Members may pay more for out‑of‑network services, and some services may not be covered at all.
Users can read ratings and reviews, and sort and filter by gender, languages spoken, and other criteria to ensure the best fit possible.

Options for accessing care
While many people prefer a traditional in‑person visit with their primary care physician (PCP) as the first option for care, there are several other ways to get care in a timely manner. Virtual care, retail clinics, and urgent care centers all offer care for illnesses and injuries that are not life‑threatening — plus, they can save time and money for non‑emergencies.
Virtual care
Also called telemedicine, virtual care is a secure, online consultation with a health care professional. This is typically the quickest and cheapest option to receive care and is useful for common, non‑emergent medical issues such as minor allergic reactions, fever, and sore throat.
Many PCPs offer virtual care options, and with MDLive, members have 24/7 access to a board‑certified doctor through a computer or smartphone.1, 2

Retail clinic
A retail clinic is a space within a pharmacy or other retail store that is staffed by nurse practitioners. Members can receive affordable, convenient care for illnesses and vaccines, minor burns, cuts and scrapes, and eye and ear pain.
Urgent care
An urgent care center is a stand‑alone clinic where board‑certified doctors treat illness or injury requiring immediate medical attention. Members can use these centers when a primary care doctor is not available, and the illness or injury is not life‑threatening but requires immediate attention.
Urgent care centers can provide faster, less expensive care than an emergency room if a person is sick or hurt.
Emergency room
While typically the most costly, members should always go to the emergency room in case of a life‑threatening medical issue or severe sickness or injury. Examples include: signs of heart attack or stroke, loss of consciousness, seizure, spine injury, or overdose.
