2023 insourcing of behavioral health benefits

Mental and physical health are often linked. In fact, Milliman studies show that the cost for treating patients with chronic medical and comorbid mental health/substance use disorder conditions are two to three times higher on average than the cost for treating those who do not have those conditions. That is why AmeriHealth is building a model of care that better integrates behavioral health with physical health.

To build this model, we need to reshape how we work with Magellan Health.

Behavioral health network

Effective January 1, 2023, AmeriHealth will begin directly managing its own network of behavioral health providers. The network will be high‑quality and comprehensive. To support this change and ensure there is no disruption in care, members will continue to have in‑network access to Magellan behavioral health professionals who have not contracted directly with AmeriHealth in 2023. The access to these Magellan providers will end once the new network is complete. Affected members will be notified in advance of any changes. Out-of-area providers will also now be covered by the Magellan network.

Behavioral health services and enhancements

As previously announced, behavioral health case management was moved from Magellan to AmeriHealth on June 1, 2022. Other behavioral health services, such as utilization management and customer service, will also be moved from Magellan to AmeriHealth in 2023.

Timelines and details for any additional migrations and/or enhancements to our behavioral health offering will be announced in Market Edge.
