Software to Support Your Front of House

Terry Gowan
, Regional Director,
Australia & New Zealand, Yardi

Enterprise resource planning software, or ERP, integrates a range of applications to automate many back-office functions. But now, Gowan (pictured) says, it’s time to turn our attention to front-of-house. In September, Yardi was named on Forbes’ inaugural list of top 100 private cloud companies in the world. Forbes editor Alex Konrad acknowledged the companies on the list for “revolutionising how businesses reach their customers today” and “digitising painful old processes”.

Gowan says before the advent of cloud computing, it was “virtually impossible” for companies to access one user-friendly, uniform platform.

“But now that smart phones are in our hands and apps have exploded, end-to-end commercial platforms are a reality,” Gowan says.

“ERP is already helping the back office – whether that’s paying suppliers or chasing tenants for rent. The next step is the front office. People who aren’t behind a screen day-to-day, such as investor relations or facilities managers, will get the most value from this approach.”

And customers have just as much to gain, Gowan adds.

“Instead of ringing up the building services manager when the air-conditioning’s not working, a tenant can simply open a portal and request a service from their landlord. Having the customer speak back to you is just an extension of your ERP.”

Gowan says these “self-service” functions can cover everything from sharing commercial leases to providing visibility of an accounting ledger.

“One of the hottest thing we are doing is P2P, or procure-to-pay,” Gowan explains.

“Suppliers can upload their invoice, type in a purchase order number, notify the payables department and check into the portal to see when it's been approved. This self-service model removes the need for emails and phone calls, and means people have all the information online in real time.”

Technology is advancing so quickly that software platforms can be used on “any device, anywhere” and Gowan says cloud-based systems are rapidly becoming business as usual.

“If your company isn’t in the cloud, it risks being left behind.”
